According to Monet, they are "the illusion of an endless whole, of water without horizon or bank." Their monumentality and the absence of human figures give the Water Lilies an abstract quality, creating a manifestation of impressionnism that is often considered disconcerting. Presented to France by Claude Monet the day after of 11 November 1918, the Water Lilies were installed in the musée de l'Orangerie in 1927, several months after his death in accordance with his plans. The eight compositions set out in the two consecutive oval rooms which have the advantage of natural light from the roof , and are oriented from west to east, following the course of the sun and one of the main routes through Paris
